"My Grandfather Private Benjamin Clitheroe was born in February 1883 in Westfield, East Dereham. He originally enlisted into the Norfolk Regiment as a Kitchener volunteer, at Norwich in January 1915 aged 31. He transferred to the Border Regiment in November 1915, being one of 350 men transferred from the Norfolk regiment as reinforcements. In December 1915 he was posted to the 8th Battalion, Border Regiment in France, with which he served until he was reported missing presumed killed on the 5th July 1916 while fighting on the Somme. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial to the missing. He left a wife and three daughters. Remembered with Honour"
