"WALTER HALLS 8th Battalion Suffolk Regiment Army Number 22985 DIED OF WOUNDS 28th July 1916 Walter Ernest Halls was born in Drinkstone on 28th December 1892, probably in Rattlesden Road, the second of 10 children (of whom 9 survived) of Charles and Emily (née Holland) Halls, and was named after his paternal grandfather. He was enrolled in Drinkstone National School on 9th Sept 1897 aged four and left on 5th December 1907 at 14, having reached school-leaving age. He joined the family grocery business in Rattlesden Road, The Green. By the 1911 census, the family were recorded as still living at The Green, Drinkstone. The occupations of Walter (then aged 18), his elder brother Bertie (age 20) and their mother, were given as assistants in the grocery and drapery shop run by Charles Halls. The entire Halls family of 11 lived on the shop premises, the business successful enough to support the whole family with Charles’ business acumen evidently acquired at his own father’s groc"
